If you have any information on performance in Wales that could be of use to the project, please get in touch!

Whether you are an artist who has made performance work in Wales, or an audience member who once witnessed a performance (voluntarily or involuntarily!), we would be pleased to hear from you.
Any material will be of interest - from actual pieces of documentation to vague memories of events caught out of the corner of one's eye.

Fluxus yn Aberystwyth 1968

Interviewees / Cyfweleion: W. Marsland, Steve Mills, John Osborne, Jonathan Smith, Ian Wallace

In 1968 the small Welsh seaside town of Aberystwyth became the location for an important milestone in the history of the British neo-avantgarde: three days of Fluxus-inspired art activities, created by London-based artists, Brian Lane and the First Dream Machine, and hosted by the student-run Aberystwyth Arts Festival. Organisers W. Marsland, Steve Mills, John Osborne and Jonathan Smith, together with audience member Ian Wallace, share their memories of staging this event at a time when radical politics and radical aesthetics went hand in hand.

Ym 1968, daeth tref fach lan môr Aberystwyth yn lleoliad ar gyfer carreg filltir bwysig yn hanes y neo-avant-garde Prydeinig: tridiau o weithgareddau celf a ddylanwadwyd gan Fluxus ac a grëwyd gan artistiaid o Lundain, Brian Lane a’r First Dream Machine. Cynhaliwyd y digwyddiad gan Gwyl Gelfyddydau Aberystwyth, dan drefniant myfyrwyr y Brifysgol. Mae’r trefnwyr, W. Marsland, Steve Mills, John Osborne a Jonathan Smith, ynghyd ag Ian Wallace a oedd yn aelod o’r gynulleidfa, yn olrhain hanes llwyfannu’r digwyddiad hwn ar adeg pan oedd gwleidyddiaeth radical ac estheteg radical yn mynd law yn llaw.

The organisers of the 1968 Aberystwyth Arts Festival (W. Marsland, Steve Mills, John Osborne, Jonathan Smith, Ian Wallace) remember how the ‘fire event’ of illuminated poetry, conceived by artist Brian Lane for Aberystwyth’s beach that year, remained unrealized.

Mae trefnwyr Gwyl Gelfyddydau Aberystwyth yn 1968 (W. Marsland, Steve Mills, John Osborne, Jonathan Smith, Ian Wallace) yn trafod pam na wireddwyd cynllun Brian Lane ar gyfer ‘digwyddiad tân’ o farddoniaeth oleuedig ar draeth y dref.
