Interviewee / Cyfwelai: Anthony Howell

Anthony Howell is a poet, novelist and performance artist. He was founder and director of The Theatre of Mistakes - a seminal performance company of the seventies, with whom he showed work at many notable international art venues from the Tate Gallery to the Sidney Biennale. He has also published a novel and several books of poetry and has lectured widely on his performance work. He is the author of The Analysis of Performance Art, and the co-author of Elements of Performance Art, the first compendium of performance exercises. A trained ballet dancer, he has recently developed 'Tango Art' - a fusion of the tango and performance art, with which he has toured widely.

Howell worked for many years as Senior Lecturer in Time-Based Art at the University of Wales Institute, Cardiff. During this time he was the editor of Grey Suit: Video for Art & Literature - an influential performance magazine distributed on VHS - and the organiser of Cardiff Art in Time, the UK's most vibrant performance art and video festival of the 1990s.

Anthony Howell was in conversation about his own work, Cardiff's performance scene in the 1990s and his involvement in Grey Suit and Cardiff Art in Time.

The conversation was part of The CAT Show - Cardiff Art in Time International Purrr-formance Art 2007, a revival of the old Cardiff Art in Time festival series. It was staged in the Space Workshop at Cardiff School of Art Design, for many years the location of Howell's work as a teacher, in front of an audience including many of Howell's former students.

Mae Anthony Howell yn fardd, nofelydd ac yn artist perfformio. Sefydlodd a bu'n gyfarwyddwr The Theatre of Mistakes - cwmni perfformio arloesol yn y saithdegau, a bu'n arddangos gwaith gyda hwy mewn nifer o leoliadau celf rhyngwladol nodedig o Oriel y Tate i'r Biennale yn Sydney. Mae hefyd wedi cyhoeddi nofel a nifer o lyfrau barddoniaeth ac mae wedi darlithio'n eang ar ei waith perfformio. Ef yw awdur The Analysis of Performance Art, a chydawdur Elements of Performance Art, y casgliad cyntaf o ymarferion perfformio. Mae wedi hyfforddi fel dawnsiwr bale, ac yn ddiweddar datblygodd 'Tango Art' - asiad o'r tango a chelfyddyd perfformio, ac mae wedi teithio'n eang gyda hwn.

Am nifer o flynyddoedd bu Howell yn Uwch-ddarlithydd Time-Based Art yn Athrofa Prifysgol Cymru, Caerdydd. Yn ystod y cyfnod hwn roedd yn olygydd ar Grey Suit: Video for Art & Literature - cylchgrawn perfformio dylanwadol a ddosbarthwyd ar VHS - ac yn drefnydd Cardiff Art in Time, gwyl celfyddyd perfformio a fideo fwyaf bywiog y DU yn ystod y 1990au.

Sgwrsiodd Anthony Howell am ei waith ei hun, sîn perfformio Caerdydd yn ystod y 1990au a'i ymrwymiad â Grey Suit a Cardiff Art in Time.

Roedd y sgwrs yn rhan o The CAT Show - Cardiff Art in Time International Purrr-formance Art 2007, sef adfywiad o'r hen gyfres o wyliau Cardiff Art in Time. Fe'i llwyfanwyd yn y Space Workshop yn Cardiff School of Art Design (Ysgol Gelf a Dylunio Caerdydd), sef lleoliad gwaith Howell fel athro am sawl blwyddyn, gerbron cynulleidfa a oedd yn cynnwys nifer o'i gyn-fyfyrwyr.
